AWANA & Operation Christmas Child

Written by Kristan Schettler

What a year we have had so far with AWANA…  we had 86 kids on our first night, and have held those numbers (even had more some nights) each week!  I am so blessed to be a part of this program.  We have seen kids having fun, learning, and growing each week.  Last week we did something that we have never done before...

We filled shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child as an AWANA club.  What a crazy night that was!  Some kids brought in boxes that were already full, some kids brought boxes that needed to be added to, and some kids brought in all different items to add to our supply.  We filled 80 boxes in 1 hour!  Our church goal was to fill 200 boxes, and, including our AWANA boxes, we filled 261!   These 261 boxes have been taken to our drop off site and are being added to the other thousands of boxes that will be given to children in underprivileged countries.  This was a huge success, and when I think of all of the children around the world who may have the opportunity to know Jesus because of those boxes, I am overwhelmed!  At the end of the night, I finally went to the car with my children, feeling just a bit “harried” by the craziness of filling all of those boxes with all of those kids.  As the night was progressing, I truly was thinking that we would not do this again next year.  After AWANA ended, and I had watched each volunteer and child leave and cleaned up some of the mess, I got in the car and let out an enormous sigh saying, “THAT WAS CRAZY.”  To which my own children replied, “THAT WAS FUN!”  I am currently planning when to fill shoeboxes next year.
